Introduction / History

Kambiwa means “return to Serra Negra.” Today, the group's main goal is to expand their land to include Serra Negra, which was turned into a Biological Reserve in the 1970s. The Kambiwa land is located in the backlands of Pernambuco, a dry region with irregular rainfall.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Kambiwa community is led by the cacique (chief), who takes care of political matters; the pajé (shaman), who is the spiritual leader; and the elders, who represent the traditional families in each village. The villages are made up of several nuclear families, living in their own houses made of mud and sticks. They survive through subsistence farming since the climate and the soil do not allow for good harvests.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Besides their own rituals, the Kambiwa also follow Catholic traditions.

What Are Their Needs?

The sandy soil and local pests make it difficult to grow certain crops. The lack of clean water is one of the main problems for their economy and daily life.
